How often should I send emails?
(my advice)
Everyday, someone asks me that question.
Whether it’s a client, one of the 2,600 guys and gals on my list, or some random dude on X.
They all want to know:
“How often should I send emails?”
After all…
On the one hand, you’ve got people like Dan Koe, Justin Welsh and Kieran Drew who send a weekly “deep dive” newsletter.
And on the other hand, you’ve got people like Ben Settle, who bombards your inbox with 3+ emails per day like a fucking napalm strike you drop on a Call of Duty map.
So it’s difficult to know what YOU should do for YOUR unique situation and YOUR unique business.
Well, here’s my (somewhat) unique take:
Your email list is like a WhatsApp group chat with your mates.
Inside your phone right now, I can guarantee you’ve got one “main” WhatsApp GC with all your closest friends which is always making your desk SHUDDER with notifications (almost always just 5 minutes after you’ve sat down to work and finally feel like you’re getting into flow state…)
And I can also guarantee you’ve got several other chats that were once a fucking blast but, over time, people stopped putting effort into, the messages dried up, and, if I asked you what the people in there have been up to this week, you wouldn’t have a damn clue.
Well, it’s no different with your list.
You can risk letting it run dry, and adopt a weekly email strategy that works for people with massive audiences (like Dan and Justin) because they have so much exposure it’s almost impossible for their audience to forget about them.
Or you can INJECT life into your list, refuse to let your most valuable group chat fade into the “Archived” folder, and keep yourself at the top of people’s mind when they open the Gmail app on their phone every morning.
And the more frequently you email your list, the better chances you have of making this happen.
Now.
I know you might not feel like you have time to send daily emails right now.
Trust me — I get it.
And over the next few months, I’ll be documenting the system (which is currently trapped inside my head) that I use to keep pumping out these emails to you almost every day.
But until it’s in a state where I’m proud to share it with you…
Here’s my genuine advice:
Start out with a weekly newsletter
Dial in a system which lets you churn out emails in 30-60 minutes per day (yes, this it could take several months of practise before you reach this stage)
Slowly progress to the point where you’re able to do this every single day so that you can build a connection with a bunch of people who have specifically elected to hear about you, your life, and most importantly, your offers (you are building a business, after all)
Because this must be your goal:
To reach the point where your emails are not only a blast to read, but the “hub” of your business which generates the majority of your revenue (so you can slowly move away from manual selling in the DMs, and towards selling “en masse” every time you open Beehiiv or ConvertKit).
And over the next few months, I’m going to be giving you a lot of insights into how I capture my ideas, “pivot” them into my offers, and turn them into emails which now pull in over 90% of my business’ revenue each month.
Because when I release my email marketing course, it’s going to be more than just a bunch of templates, hacks, and a “swipe file” of subject lines that you have no idea how to apply to your unique business, brand and offers.
It’s going to be a deep dive into how I THINK about emails in the first place (along with all the writing systems I use, of course).
Because, from talking to dozens of creators, business owners and people trying to build their personal brand, that’s what you actually want:
A peek behind the curtain at my writing “brain”, the thought processes I go through, and how I turn my everyday stories, thoughts and ideas into emails you guys (for one reason or another) want to read.
So, stay tuned.
There’s a lot of heat coming over the next few weeks and months.
Talk soon,
Harry
PS. What’s your ONE biggest struggle when it comes to writing emails right now?
Reply “Email”, tell me what you’re finding hard, and I’ll do my best to help (I reply to every email personally)
