Finding your niche with maths and rockets...
One of the best things about being a creator is being able to connect the dots between disparate parts of life.
For example…
There is a branch of mathematics called…
Control Theory
I won’t go into too many details (it took me over 2 years to figure out what the fuck it was about, and it’s been far too long since I even looked at a “partial differential equation”...)
But, in essence, here is what control theory says:
You have a goal.
You have a system which monitors feedback against that goal.
As you deviate from your goal, the system sends signals towards the “processor” (you) to tell it to adjust its course.
Now…
That’s all very “abstract”.
So… let me illustrate it with a real-life example:
Rockets
Rockets are a prime example of Control Theory in action.
The rocket has a desired “goal” (e.g. land on the moon).
The rocket has an internal system which monitors its position relative to where it should be.
As the rocket strays from its path, this system sends signals to a “processor” (the astronaut), which adjusts the rocket’s course.
Here is a simple diagram to illustrate how this looks:
The interesting part here is the interaction between the “feedback” and “processing” block.
(I promise I’m going somewhere with this, btw).
There are 3 parts to how this processing works:
Instant Corrections: this part of the processor reacts immediately to any “error” in your journey. Which is great — you need to be able to make rapid adjustments. But sometimes you “overdo it” and end up too far in the other direction. So, to “smooth” things out, you also look at…
Historic Errors: this part of the processor looks at ALL the mistakes you’ve from the past, aggregates the errors, and tries to make smaller, more informed “tweaks” to your current trajectory.
Future Predictions: this part of the processor makes a best guess at what you might get wrong in the future. And then it tries to make adjustments before these errors occur. This, again, helps to “smooth” out the system.
NOW…. I’m going to stop talking about rockets.
And, instead, I’m going to talk about…
YOU
(And your “niche”).
Read this, and tell me if it sounds (eerily) familiar…
1) “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing” mode
You’ve just started posting content.
But… you’ve got no fucking clue what to post, who to post for, and what the hell you’re really doing.
You know your “end goal” (time and financial freedom).
But right now, it feels like you’re throwing shit at the wall and looking at what sticks.
And because you don’t have much experience, you latch onto any positive signals (e.g. a post gets good engagement), completely FREAK OUT at the sign of any negative ones (e.g. your post bombs), and you end up making rapid, SPORADIC jumps all over the place without ANY real strategy.
It feels like you’re zig-zagging all over the shot.
If this sounds like you — don’t worry. This is where we ALL start as creators (myself included).
Fortunately, once you’ve taken enough “shots in the dark”, you get the benefit of something very important: data. And that allows you to spot…
2) Historic Errors
You look through all your old content.
You start to see patterns — both things that went right, and things that went wrong.
And you use these “insights” to fine-tune your content strategy today so that you don’t make the same errors again.
Which is great — you’re getting a handle on the content game. You’re starting to see the forest for the trees.
And now you can use that data to figure out not only what went wrong in the past, but also to think about…
3) Future planning
You’re not being reactive anymore.
Instead, you’re being proactive.
You’re thinking about your “long-term” content strategy, and you’re able to stop yourself making mistakes before they happen.
ANDDDDDDDDDDDDD….
Do you see it?
The analogy staring you straight in the face.
You are the astronaut on a rocket.
You are watching your journey, asking for feedback.
And you’re using that feedback to dictate the direction of your brand, positioning, strategy and offers going forwards so that you can reach your goal quicker.
But just like the rocket…
You don’t know where to “aim” at the start.
Instead, you take a “stab” in the dark — your “best guess”. And then you use the “signals” you receive (your audience’s reaction, your own sense of personal satisfaction etc.) to course-correct as you go.
Or, put another way…
You don’t find your niche.
You learn it ;)
(Fucking loved writing this email, btw).
Talk soon,
Harry
PS. While I can’t tell you what YOUR niche is…
I CAN give you systems which allow you to find your niche 10x quicker.
This is what I do —
I help people see EXACTLY where they’re veering off course, and put them back on track so that they can get to their goals faster.
This way, they don’t spend weeks, months (or even YEARS) stuck taking “shots in the dark” with their content, end up frustrated and confused, and decide it to call it quits on a game which could’ve changed their ENTIRE life in as little as 3-6 months.
Does getting to your goal (no 9-5, no morning alarm clock, and no boss leering over your shoulder) 10x faster sound like something you’re interested in?
Great.
Because that’s what you’ll be getting with my Hypnotic Writer course when it drops on August 20th.
